Workshops
The Isle of Skye offers some of the most extraordinary scenery within the British Isles and, combined with the luminous quality of light, provides an exceptional location for photographers to cultivate and stimulate their photographic potential. The workshops, all led by Alan Campbell, are designed to provide personal guidance to promote photographic talent within an enjoyable small group of like-minded individuals.

As an island resident, Alan has an intimate knowledge of the magnificent mountains, the coral beaches and the towering headlands with an acute awareness of the best locations to visit throughout the year. The Isle of Skye offers a hugely varied landscape within a compact geography and Alan chooses locations that themselves offer inspiration and variety.

Embracing both film and digital technologies, Alan's method allows the photographer to quickly grasp the fundamentals of image-making before moving on to develop a combination of technical competence with creative flair.

Workshop Outline

For 2009, Alan is hosting a number of 3-day workshops which are likely to provide maximum benefit to those in the early stages of their photographic journey and will address the key principles of camera-craft (such as film speed, shutter speed, aperture and depth of field) and their role in the creation of atmospheric and creative images. Each workshop is limited to a maximum of 6 people.

The first day involves a combination of indoor tutorial sessions and short outdoor assignments to develop a thorough understanding of the basic photographic principles and to ensure we are all comfortable with using our equipment. The following 2 days will be spent at various locations around Skye developing our awareness of the photographic opportunities around us to create dynamic and imaginative images of the landscape. The locations will generally involve fairly short walks over uneven ground. Perhaps something a little more strenuous, but certainly not too difficult.

The workshops are based at Woodrising Gallery in Broadford, Isle of Skye. The first day runs from 9am to 5pm with the following 2 days running from 8am to 6pm. Transport to the locations will be provided but you should bring your own food and drink each day.

The price of the 3-day workshop is £295 per person.

The Isle of Skye - The Reality

You may have the impression (from this website as much as anywhere) that Skye is a land of majestic snowy peaks piercing sapphire skies, of turqoise waters lapping coral sands and of distant islands sinking into the embers of a crimson sunset.

Skye is indeed just like that ... ... sometimes.

It is best, however, not to forget the mist, the cloud, the midges, the high winds, the cold and of course the occasional spot of rain.

Such is the life of the outdoor photographer that we must occasionally endure the worst of conditions in order to find the best. It is often the case that it is the mist which provides that enigmatic atmosphere, the cloud which causes the piercing shaft of sunlight and the cold which initiates autumn leaves to break into their unimaginable hues - the midges however we have yet to find a reason for.

So if you are still keen to visit some of the most extraordinary environments for landscape photography, then you will be very welcome on our workshops - just bring some waterproofs.
