Alan's art draws on a combination of exquisite natural photographic talent and
a lifelong absorption with the environment to create captivating images that portray
the dramatic beauty of the natural world. Alan's enthusiasm for the environment
was sparked after reading the works of John Muir whose philosophy of protecting
wilderness areas through his writings and endeavour is echoed in Alan's photography
and his desire to encourage greater appreciation of our natural environment.
Muir noted that "most people are on the world, not in it - have no conscious
sympathy or relationship to anything about them - separate and rigidly alone like
marbles of polished stone, touching but separate." Alan's exquisite images originate
from his being not simply on the world, but in it. The inspiration behind
many of Alan's photographs derives directly from the extraordinary landscape and
quality of light in north west Scotland and his home on the Isle of Skye where
the elements seem to collide with such passion that the environment is lifted
beyond simply the visually spectacular to the emotionally intense. This inspiration
allied with considerable technical competence and supreme aesthetic judgment forms
the foundation for Alan's wonderful photographs.
